Tony Colman

Date of birth

24 July 1943

Political profile

The man who unseated David Mellor at the famously rowdy Putney election in 1997, Tony Colman has an unusual background for a Labour MP.

He has long experience in the upper echelons of industry, having served for a long time as a director of the Burton Group.

In the 1990s, he combined this with a civic devotion as the highly regarded leader of Merton Borough Council.

He also chaired the Low Pay Unit for four years.

Great predictions for his parliamentary career have not, however, so far been fulfilled.

Tipped for early promotion, he put in a few years as PPS to Adam Ingram and currently sits on the Commons international development select committee.

Nonetheless, he makes effective use of his background and chaired the All Party Parliamentary Group on Retail.

His long term interest is in socially responsible investment and he has introduced several Ten Minute Rule Bills illuminating aspects of social investment policy.
