Paul Truswell

Date of birth

17 November 1955

Political profile

A former journalist and local government officer, Paul Truswell was elected to the Commons in 1997, becoming the first non-Conservative MP in his seat for 75 years.

He has not made a big impact on a national level in the Commons: he is an infrequent speaker in the main chamber and has not been a member of a select committee since 1999, when he left the Environmental Audit committee.

He has, however, brought about a change in the law, when he successfully saw the Licensing (Young Persons) Act through Parliament, tightening up the law about alcohol sales to under 18 year olds, following the death of a young constituent.

He has otherwise concentrated on working for his constituency, using the local knowledge gained from years as a councillor.

Besides holding adjournment debates on the public service provision in his seat, he is a strong advocate of community-led regeneration and has promoted credit unions and revised planning laws as potential engines of local economic change.
