Jackie Lawrence
Date of birth 9 August 1948 Political profile A new MP for a new seat in 1997, Jackie Lawrence had previously worked as an assistant to Nick Ainger MP, as well as being a local councillor. A pro-European mainstream new Labour loyalist, she concentrates mainly on Welsh issues. She is an advocate of the Welsh language and supported calls for Welsh to be available as a nationality option on the 2001 census, as well as being secretary of the Welsh group of Labour MPs. She is interested in environmental issues and is as keen on the Kyoto agreement as she is opposed to GM crop trials. She is also passionate about animal welfare issues and is one of the Commons' most active opponents of fox hunting. A former member of the Commons trade and industry select committee - who called for Railtrack to be taken back into the public sector - Ms Lawrence became a team PPS to trade and industry ministers in 2003. When supporting a government campaign aimed at reducing teenage pregnancy, she revealed that she had given birth to a daughter at 17, who was subsequently adopted.
