Pamplona's ostrich run
The streets of Pamplona, famed for its bull-running fiesta, echoed to a different sound on Monday when dozens of ostriches rampaged through the northern Spanish town. Spanish television went to Pamplona to film this new phenomenon.

A more relaxed crowd watches as the ostriches sprint through the streets.
The sharp horns and clattering hooves of Pamplona's bulls were replaced by a more comical sight

Despite appearances, ostriches can be dangerous.
But the birds, which are often more than 6ft tall, have sharp claws and a powerful kick

The hordes of traditional bull-runners are absent as children take to the streets.
Audacious youngsters took over from Pamplona's traditional dare-devil runners...

Three young girls look on as the ostriches run through the streets.
... as a younger crowd looked on from the safety of the sidelines

Older residents watch the youngsters being chased by the ostriches.
Dressed in the traditional white and red of the San Fermin festival, children fled the approaching birds

Ostriches are a relatively new arrival in Spain
The idea for this new run came from the arrival of an ostrich farm in the area a few years ago

Animal rights groups have expressed their opposition to this new version of the bull run.
But like the bull run, the ostrich run has led to strong criticism from animal rights groups.
