Two hurt in shooting
Police tape
Two people were injured in the shooting in Ashford
Six men have been arrested following a fight between a group of men in Kent.

Two people were hurt in the shooting - which was believed to have involved groups of asylum seekers - in the Wotton Road area of Ashford on Monday.

A 19-year-old man, described as eastern European, suffered a gunshot wound to his upper left arm.

Another man had been stabbed in the back and the arm.

Missing gunman

The 19-year-old was taken to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford but his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The stab victim was treated and discharged from the hospital but was then immediately arrested by police.

Police are still looking for one suspect, who was possibly armed.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "We are still looking for one of the offenders who we believe has a gun.

"But we believe the man is holed up somewhere."

Police were called to the area at 1845 BST following reports of a disturbance, a Kent Police spokesman said.

'Bad impact'

Interpreters have been called in to translate between detectives and the suspects.

"We don't know the immigration status of the men involved," he said.

"The Immigration Service have been contacted."

One of the men being held is from Ashford, the other five are all eastern European teenagers living in Ashford and London.

Jill Casebourne, who chairs the Kent Refugee Action Network, said on Radio 4's Today programme: "Obviously when anything like this happens it has a very bad impact on local attitudes to asylum seekers and refugees.

"But these incidents are, thank god, very rare.

"When you have a large number of young men, which it tends to be, fairly closely together in one area you're going to get sparks flying of one sort or another."
