No breakthrough in Ethiopia, Eritrea peace talks

Summit talks aimed at ending the border conflict between Ethiopia and Eritrea have ended without any final agreement.

The talks were held in Burkina Faso, the current chair of the Organisation of African Unity, which sponsored the mediation effort.

The Burkina Faso President, Blaise Compaore, said the Ethiopian and Eritrean leaders had promised to study draft proposals worked out by the mediators, and he was waiting to hear their views.

Fighting between the two countries broke out in May.

There have been no significant clashes since mid-June, but reports of artillery duels have become more common recently.
