Sunday, November 8, 1998 Published at 10:28 GMT World: Africa UN says Burundi Sanctions must go The United Nations Security Council has called for sanctions imposed on Burundi by neighbouring countries to be lifted or at least suspended. The security council called on regional leaders to review the sanctions, imposed after a coup in July 1996. It also urged the official mediator at peace talks in Arushawith rebel Hutu groups, the former President of Tanzania, Julius Nyerere, to help in the matter. The government of Burundi's President Pierre Buyoya and some regional leaders have previously called for the sanctions to be lifted. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
