Brilliant Blewett punishes England

The Redbacks skipper played some punishing back foot shots

England fought back with three vital wickets after a century by captain Greg Blewett threatened to put South Australia in total control of the game at the Adelaide Oval.

BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew reports (BBC 5 Live)
Blewett sent a reminder of his ability to the Australian selectors with a superb 143 as the state side reached 262 for five at the end of the second day's play, giving them a 75-run lead.

The England bowling was the best of the tour so far after they were challenged by coach David Lloyd to "do much better".

His demand followed a series of rash shots which restricted them to a lowly first innings total of 187

England made Blewett work hard for his runs and instead of embarking on his trademark attacking style, he was restricted to just six boundaries in a century off 205 deliveries.

Only when he attempted to force the pace after tea was he forced into an error by misreading Mark Ramprakash's delivery which spun back and clipped his leg stump.

Until then, the only successes were Dominic Cork's dismissal of opener Martin Faull in the morning session and Dean Headley's triumphant appeal for leg before against Chris Davies after lunch.

But the disciplined performance finally reaped a reward after Blewett's departure.

Three overs afterwards, Angus Fraser claimed his first wicket of the tour by trapping Nathan Adcock leg before.

Then Ben Johnson's frustration at being unable to score prompted him to drive wildly at Cork and edge behind to Stewart to crown an impressive display from the England attack.

Blewett not first choice

Blewett confirmed: "I thought the English bowlers looked very good today. For them to get back into the game, they played it perfect really because they had to keep it tight and bowl pretty well and that's exactly what they did."

Yet the fact that he survived for over five hours at the crease is not good news for England.

Despite his fine record - three Ashes centuries as well as this latest innings - Blewett is not now considered good enough for the Test side.

He was dropped from the Test side after playing 14 successive Tests without scoring a hundred.

Ricky Ponting, Michael Bevan and Matthew Elliott are all ahead of him in the pecking order.

"The competition is awesome - it makes it tough," admitted Blewett.

"This is the second time I have been out of the side and I know if you put the hard work in and keep performing, they won't discard you."

However he played down his chances of making the Australian team for the Brisbane Test, starting on 20 November.

"I'm not relying on playing the first Test, that's for sure. Every time you pick up a paper someone else has made a hundred - Matty Elliott has made three so far this year."
