The United Nations refugee agency UNHCR has confirmed that more than one-hundred Namibian separatists have fled into neighbouring Botswana over the past few days.

They're currently being held in detention for entering Botswana illegally.

The Namibians -- who are seeking the secession of the Caprivi Strip -- have requested asylum.

But the UNHCR has made clear that they can only be considered refugees if they renounce their separatist struggle.

Several high-profile members of the Namibian opposition are reported to be among those who've fled to Botswana.
