Guivarc'h moves north ![]() Guivarc'h during a rare appearance in black and white Glasgow Rangers have paid Newcastle United £3.5m for World Cup-winning striker Stephane Guivarc'h - just six months after the Frenchman snubbed the Ibrox club.
"I was impressed when I came to Rangers in May but for most French players, the Premiership is a better level to play in. Kenny Dalglish was keen to take me and I made a decision to join Newcastle then," Guivarc'h explained. "But now all I am concerned about is helping Rangers win things. Of course it is vital to win the championship, but it is also important to succeed in Europe." He fell out of favour under new St James' Park boss Ruud Gullit, despite scoring against Liverpool during his first game in charge at St James Park. But Gullit wished him well in Glasgow, saying: "I hope he can prove himself there. Rangers are a big club. They have the best players and nearly every year they win the championship. They create a lot of chances, so if he can't score goals there......" Guivarc'h found the net 47 times in 57 games for Auxerre, but had a barren World Cup despite France's success. He has signed a three-and-a-half year contract at Ibrox and goes straight into the Rangers squad for Sunday's trip to St Johnstone. Boss Dick Advocaat said he had no problem with the fact that Guivarc'h had previously turned Rangers down. "I would rather look at the positive side of things than the negative. I think we are very fortunate he has signed for us," the Dutchman added. |
