Friday, November 6, 1998 Published at 20:08 GMT Sport: Football FA fine Ince for V-sign gesture ![]() Paul Ince is given his marching orders in Stockholm Liverpool midfielder Paul Ince has been fined £1,500 by the Football Association following his dismissal during England's European Championship qualifier in Sweden. An FA disciplinary commission found Ince guilty of misconduct after he made a V-sign gesture as he left the pitch in Stockholm on September 5, but decided not to impose any suspension. Ince is already serving a three-match ban imposed by Europe's governing body, UEFA - one game for the red card and two more for comments he made to Italian referee Pierluigi Collina. An FA statement read: "At a hearing in Manchester, which the player did not attend, the commisssion reached its verdict after considering a letter from Paul Ince in which he apologised for his action. "Both the player and Liverpool FC pointed out he had already been punished with a suspension by UEFA arising from the dismissal."
Liverpool's joint managers, Roy Evans and Gerard Houllier, criticised the FA decision. Houllier condemned the fine as "silly" and added: "He's got three matches out and he can't play. What is the point of fining him too?" Ince is facing further action after being sent off in Liverpool's UEFA Cup game in Valencia earlier this week. Officials will meet to discuss his case on November 12 and a UEFA spokesman said: "The player's record is not very positive and that could have an effect." Ince claims his dismissal in Spain was harsh and has vowed not to change his combative style of play. "That's me, that's what I'm like. You know what you get and if people don't like it, there's nothing I can do about it now," he commented. |
