Friday, November 6, 1998 Published at 05:38 GMT World: Asia-Pacific Crucial police report produced in Malaysia trial A senior Malaysian police officer says he concluded last year that sexual allegations against the then deputy prime minister, Anwar Ibrahim, were false, and appeared to be deliberately created. At Mr Anwar's trial for corruption, the head of the special branch, Mohamed Said Awang, read from a report he sent to the Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohammed. In it he said allegations of Mr Anwar's sexual misconduct had no truth, and certain groups appeared to be working behind the scenes to smear him. Mr Mohamed Said earlier testified that he'd lie under oath, if ordered to by his superiors. The defence had demanded that the police report be produced in evidence. Mr Anwar denies several counts of abuse of power, as well as allegations of sodomy and adultery. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
