Bill Rammell
Date of birth 10 October 1959 Political profile Bill Rammell was first elected to the Commons in 1997, and even among that generally Europhile intake stands out as being a fan on the European Union. He in an extremely enthusiastic cheerleader for a more integrated Union, and is an unambiguous supporter of British entry into the single currency. He sat in the 1997 parliament on both the European legislation and scrutiny committees. He is generally a loyal supporter of the government, and is a party moderniser who supports electoral reform. He has occasional differences with the executive - he abstained over the cuts to lone parent benefits, and was one of the authors of a critical article in Labour journal Renewal. However, this did not stop him joining the government in 2001 as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Tessa Jowell, before moving on the whips office. In the October 2002 reshuffle caused by the resignation of Estelle Morris as education secretary he was promoted to Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Foreign Office.
