US Energy Secretary to Taiwan

The United States Energy Secretary, Bill Richardson, is to go to Taiwan next week for talks on economic and commercial issues.

A spokesman in Washington said the visit did not signal a change in policy towards China.

The Department of Energy said Mr Richardson would see Taiwanese leaders, and would also meet members of the American business community working in Taipei to discuss their participation in the country's economy.

The announcement of the trip has prompted a protest from the Chinese embassy in Washington.
