Indonesian opposition call not to disrupt parliament

An Indonesian opposition leader, Amien Rais, has called on his supporters not to disrupt next week's meeting of the peoples'consultative assembly, the highest legislative body in the country.

He indicated that if the assembly did not draw up a timetable for free elections, he might change his position.

Speaking to the BBC, Mr Rais said he was concerned that an anarchic situation might result and there could be confrontations with the security forces.

Mr Rais also accused the government of President Habibie of lacking credibility and demanded that it should listen to the voice of the people.
