Thursday, November 5, 1998 Published at 16:58 GMT World: Africa Gabonese president warns against violence Campaigning for the Gabonese presidential elections began today amid warnings by President Omar Bongo to opposition parties not to stir up violence. Speaking on Gabonese television, Mr Bongo alleged that certain political parties --which he did not name --were planning to launch a civil war if the elections did not go their way. Correspondents say Mr Bongo, who has been in power since 1967, is the favourite to win the election. Among those challenging him is Paul Mba Abessole, a Catholic priest and the mayor of Libreville. He challenged the results of the previous election which was followed by a widespread general strike. The election will be held on December the sixth. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
