Saturday, November 7, 1998 Published at 09:33 GMT Entertainment Staying alive with the Bee Gees ![]() The Bee Gees: Four decades of hits With Saturday Night Fever the musical appearing on the West End stage and their songs back in the charts, the Bee Gees are hot again. Some big stars are shown to also be big Bee Gees fans at a celebrity appearance to be shown on ITV on Saturday. Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb perform hit after hit from their four-decade career and talk about their childhoods, their musical career, and their late brother Andy for An Audience With The Bee Gees. Some of the evening's most entertaining performances, however, take place not on stage, but in the audience. Former Blue Peter presenter John Leslie, for one, doesn't seem shy about singing along from the audience, while Mrs Merton comedienne Caroline Aherne sits beside him looking slightly bemused. Even footballer David Ginola proves a word-perfect Bee Gees wannabe, belting out Stayin' Alive with gusto. During the final Saturday Night Fever medley, only Rolling Stone Bill Wyman seems unmoved, standing with his arms folded and nodding occasionally.
Robin Gibb has said the band thought it one of their favourite versions of their songs, no small praise from a group that has written hits for Barbra Streisand, Al Green and Celine Dion. Their latest studio album, Still Waters, was released in 1997, almost 35 years after their first recordings. Recent months have seen the release of both a Las Vegas concert CD and a tribute album featuring current acts Space, Robbie Williams, and the Lightning Seeds. Far from being a 'comeback' concert after years in the wilderness, An Audience With The Bee Gees shows that the group has, as an ITV spokeswoman said, "always been massive, for the last 30 years." As Barry Gibb says: "We believe in our songs. We think the songs stand up and time takes care of that. "If a song is good, you will still be humming it in 20 years."
