Unidentified gunmen have shot dead a Kashmiri separatist leader, Ghulam Kadir Wani, in Indian-administered Kashmir.

Reports say the gunmen, who forced their way into his house at Arni village near the state capital, Srinagar, also shot dead his niece.

Dr Wani was the general secretary of the Muslim United Front, which is the forerunner of the separatist all-party Hurriyat Conference.

He had not been involved active politics for the past two years.
