Indian police say over forty people were killed when an overcrowded bus plunged off a bridge into a river near Cuttack city, in the eastern Indian state of Orissa.

They said the driver was trying to overtake another vehicle on the bridge when the accident occurred.

Thirty six bodies have been recovered from the river.

More than thirty people were injured in the crash.
