Amoruso pleads for patience

Rangers defender Lorenzo Amoruso has pleaded with fans to back him during Thursday's UEFA Cup second round clash with Bayer Leverkusen at Ibrox.

The Italian has been subject of abuse from fans after several indifferent displays this term, but while he accepts he may have made errors, he says he has been hurt by the reaction.

Amoruso spent much of last season on the sidelines after his £3.9m switch from Fiorentina before launching his Ibrox career - which he is now threatening to cut short.

Speaking ahead of Thursday's bid to retain a 2-1 first-leg lead over the Germans, the defender tried to reason with his detractors that he needs them on his side, because the opposition support will not be.

He said: "Maybe they will blame me if we lose, it does not matter for me as I don't think we can lose because we are determined to win tonight (Wednesday).

"It is very important for everybody to pass this round as after that anything is possible, so we will give the maximum for every ball.

"I will consider my future at the end of the season, it is not simple to have this problem with the fans even though sometimes I make mistakes."

Amoruso was suspended for the stunning 2-1 success in Leverkusen a fortnight ago, Scott Wilson deputising with admirable composure, but manager Dick Advocaat will play him on Thursday.

The Dutchman has offered a fierce defence of his faith in Amoruso to remain the Rangers captain and now the player is keen to repay him.

Advocaat said: "I made my choice for him to be captain and when I have made up my mind I don't change it.

"I thought the fans' reaction to him against Dundee United on Saturday was quite unfair.

"If players can do the job they stay, if not I find someone else but so far he has shown he can do it."
