Taiwan army chiefs jailed for corruption

Three senior army officials in Taiwan have been imprisoned for corruption.

Major Lee Cheng was jailed for eleven years for taking bribes totalling over fifteen thousand dollars from contractors bidding for a military construction contract.

Major-General Woh Chi-kao and Lieutenant-General Liu Hsueh-ta, the highest ranking military officer ever to be convicted in Taiwan, received lesser sentences for their roles in the case.

The scandal erupted in February with news reports that two of the officers had been beaten up by angry contractors who had given them bribes but failed to secure a contract.

The case may still go to appeal.
