Tony Wright
Tony Wright

Date of birth

12 August 1954

Political profile

Tony Wright was first elected to the Commons in 1997, after a long career as a full time Labour Party activist and organiser.

He had also served on Great Yarmouth Council, and was its leader for two years before entering Parliament, in which time he established local public-private partnership initiatives.

Before becoming a full time political worker, he had been a mechanical engineer and is supported by the GMB union.

He is generally a party loyalist, although he voted against the government over select committee membership in 2001.

He continues to concentrate strongly on constituency issues, particularly a long running campaign to upgrade a local road to a dual carriageway.

He is also chair of the All Party ME Group.
