Quentin Davies
Date of birth 29 May 1944 Political profile Quentin Davies served in Iain Duncan Smith's shadow cabinet, as Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary. Under Michael Howard's leadership, however, he has returned to the backbenches. He had also served under William Hague, most notably as a defence spokesman running up to the 2001 election. He was Parliamentary Private Secretary at the Department of Education and Science (1988-90); and at the Home Office (1990-91). Before his election as an MP he had previously worked as a diplomat and a banker. In 1996, as a member of the Standards and Privileges Committee, he confronted his Parliamentary colleague, David Willetts, whom the committee later accused of "dissembling" in his evidence. This led to Mr Willetts' resignation as Paymaster General - a post which Mr Davies would later hold in a shadow capacity. Mr Davies was one of the earliest MPs to support Kenneth Clarke's unsuccessful 2001 bid for the Conservative leadership. Contact 020 7219 5200 gordoncummingj@parliament.uk
