Martin Caton
Martin Caton

Date of birth

15 June 1951

Political profile

Martin Caton was elected for the safe Labour seat of Gower in 1997 after more than a decade of service as a researcher to a Labour MEP.

Since then he has established a reputation as one of the more independent-minded and leftish backbenchers, and as an occasional rebel, particularly over cuts in benefits.

He mainly concentrates on constituency issues, with a strong interest in both health and the environment (he is chair of the All Party Group on Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty).

His wider political interests include a committed opposition to nuclear weapons - he is still a member of CND.
