Malcolm Bruce
Malcolm Bruce

Date of birth

17 November 1944

Political profile

Malcolm Bruce is one of the longest serving members of the Parliamentary Liberal Democrat Party, having held his Scottish seat since 1983 (initially as a Liberal).

In that time he has held many of the most senior positions in the party, including a long stint as leader of the party in Scotland - currently he is the party's trade and industry spokesman.

He stood for the leadership of the party when Paddy Ashdown stepped down in 1999, and came a creditable third.

In Liberal Democrat terms he is very much a moderate, although he was a strong opponent of the now largely defunct "project" bringing Labour and the Lib Dems closer together.
