Birthday Girl has not done well despite a stellar cast

Nicole Kidman film Birthday Girl has had a disappointing debut at the UK box office a week before ex-husband Tom Cruise's Minority Report opens.

Spiderman has held onto the top spot in the UK and Ireland, with its weekend total of £2,605,993 contributing to an already impressive three week gross of nearly £21m.

But it will face very stiff competition at the weekend from Steven Spielberg's dark sci-fi thriller Minority Report, buoyed by Tom Cruise's charm offensive with fans at last week's London première.

His ex-wife's latest took only £237,165 and the number seven spot over its first weekend, despite relatively good reviews.

But it suffered from only screening at 133 sites - a low total - and the British-American co-production may benefit from word of mouth.

Murder By Numbers was the highest new entry, according to the figures provided by Screen International, but fell well short of Spider-Man with only £729,154.

Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones drops one place to number three, taking £541,918 after seven weeks in the chart.

Spider-Man faces a stern test from Minority Report

Rollerball, an all-action remake of Norman Jewison's 1975 political parable and sport extravaganza, failed to impress British and Irish cinemagoers, taking the number nine spot with only £136,243.

Kissing Jessica Stein is proving a London and arthouse hit, dropping from number 10 to 12th spot but taking £81,033 across only 31 sites - making it the the highest per site average apart from Spider-Man.
