Tommy McAvoy
Date of birth 14 Devember 1943 Political profile Because of his job Tommy McAvoy has not made a substantive speech in the Commons chamber or asked a question since before the 1997 election. The longest serving member of the Commons Whips' Office, and one of the few to survive the clear-out which followed the 2001 election, he is a feared taskmaster among backbenchers. He is one of the most powerful figures in the parliamentary Labour party. He has represented Glasgow Rutherglen since 1987, but has immensely strong local roots having been born and educated in the seat, as well as working there as a union official. He continues to be very active in his constituency, supporting the local workforce. Formerly on the left of the party, he is now utterly loyal to the leadership, especially Gordon Brown. A Catholic, he is opposed to abortion and voted against extensions to stem cell research. Contact Commons office: 020 7219 5009
