Jimmy Wray
James Wray

Date of birth

28 April 1938

Political profile

A Labour MP almost entirely out of step with New Labour, Jimmy Wray was first elected to Parliament in 1987 after seven years of unemployment.

He immediately joined the Campaign group, and supported Tony Benn's 1988 attempt to depose Neil Kinnock as Labour leader.

He opposed Tony Blair's revision of Clause IV of the Labour constitution, and is a die-hard Eurosceptic.

While appreciating Gordon Brown's performance as Chancellor, he has called for economic policy to be more directly redistributionist.

He is a vocal advocate of the needs of his impoverished constituency, and has campaigned strongly on "quality of life" issues, fighting against the prevalence of drugs and knives in the community.

He is also an opponent of water fluoridation.

He did not support the repeal of Section 28 and is an opponent of liberal abortion law.

He is also the Commons' leading boxing fan, and supported Mike Tyson's controversial last fight in the UK.
