John Robertson
John Robertson

Date of birth

17 April 1952

Political profile

John Robertson entered the Commons in November 2000 under a considerable burden.

He won the by-election caused by the death of Scottish First Minister Donald Dewar.

He had originally been Mr Dewar's election agent, and had intended to stand for Anniesland for the Scottish Parliament, but agreed to stand for Westminster instead.

A long-time BT worker (he joined when it was still the GPO) and CWU activist, he is a low-profile mainstreamer who has shown loyalty to the leadership.

He is an active campaigner against smoking and a supporter of ban on tobacco advertising.

He has also spoken about the future of the Clyde's shipbuilding industry.
