Peter Duncan
Peter Duncan

Date of birth

10 July 1965

Political profile

Peter Duncan may be something of a lonely man in the House of Commons, as the only Conservative MP north of the border.

He took the seat of Galloway and Upper Nithsdale from the SNP in 2001, with the lowest Conservative majority in the Commons.

He was the beneficiary of local anger in one of the regions most badly affected by the foot and mouth crisis.

His unique status throws an unexpected spotlight on a man who only decided to seek election two years before his successful campaign.

He has a background in commerce as a director of a family textile firm.

As with many Tories, he is something of a devolution sceptic, and has said that he sees the Commons as "the main chamber for political decision making".

In November 2003, he became shadow secretary of state for Scotland.
