Michael Jack
Michael Jack

Date of birth

17 September 1946

Political profile

A well-respected former minister, Michael Jack's career in the Conservative Party has suffered from his failure to share the Euroscepticism prevalent among his colleagues.

Since his first election to the Commons in 1987, he made steady progress through the ministerial ranks, serving at four different departments.

His longest postings were as Agriculture Minister and Financial Secretary to the Treasury.

He is a non-partisan, pragmatic politician, and a member of the Tory Reform Group.

In opposition, he supported Ken Clarke's 1997 bid for the leadership, but was appointed to William Hague's Shadow Cabinet nonetheless, serving as Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

However, his pro-European views made his position increasingly difficult and he returned to the backbenches in 1998, where he has remained ever since.
