President Clinton and the Slovenian Prime Minister, Janez Drnovsek, have met in Washington to discuss Slovenia's hopes of being among the next wave of countries to join NATO.
The White House spokesman Joe Lockhart said that President Clinton had expressed Washington's willingness to work with Slovenia to make it as strong a candidate as possible for future membership.
Mr Drnovsek said that he was very satisfied with the meeting.
