Political profile

John MacDougall was first elected to the Commons in 2001, after leading Fife Council for nine years.

His predecessor in the seat was former Scottish First Minister Henry McLeish, who had also led Fife Council.

He is strongly pro-European and has extensive connections in the EU, having sat on the body investigating financial irregularity in the European Community.

He is also a former vice-president of the Assembly of the European Regions.
