Arrests after chimney deaths
The chimney at the Bolton plant
Two workers were engulfed in a fireball
Two men have been arrested by police after two workers died demolishing a 150-metre high chimney in Bolton.

Paul Wakefield, 40, and Craig Whelan, 23, were engulfed in a fireball while working on the chimney at Carnauld Metalbox Food UK.

Two men, aged 38 and 56, were arrested on Monday on suspicion of manslaughter.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said the pair were later released on police bail, pending further inquiries.

The two workers at the Westhoughton firm, who were both from Nottinghamshire, died in May.

They were working on a cradle and demolishing the chimney from the top down when the incident happened.

It is believed a spark ignited a coating in the chimney, causing the fireball.
