Hugh Robertson
Hugh Robertson

Date of birth

9 October 1962

Political profile

Hugh Robertson is one of several former army officers on the Tory benches.

He was for many years in the Life Guards, during which time he served in Northern Ireland, Bosnia and the Gulf.

He resigned in 1995 because he wanted to pursue a career in politics, working for merchant bank Schroders until his election in 2001.

Unsurprisingly given his background, his political interests lie mainly in defence, on which he is hawkish.

He helped to develop Tory defence policy in the last Parliament, and also acted as an adviser on security for the shadow Northern Ireland secretary.

But the September 2004 reshuffle saw him join the front bench as a spokesman on sport.
