Mark Hoban
Date of birth 31 March 1964 Political profile Mark Hoban was first elected in 2001, but his links with Conservative politics go back a long way. He acted as bag carrier to Christopher Chope MP during the 1987 and 1992 elections, before being given his own crack at a hopeless seat, with an appeal to the electors of South Shields, in 1997. He won the safe seat of Fareham in 2001 after a campaign which showed he had a fairly standard set of Tory opinions - in favour of more police and tougher punishment for criminals, against the euro. Like many of his Conservative colleagues, he felt sufficiently strongly about the latter issue to reject John Major's 'wait and see' approach in 1997 in favour of outright opposition. He also called for a revival of the south coast shipbuilding industry. His non political career, as a senior manager at accountants PriceWaterhouseCooper, has helped him develop his political interests in the economy. He focused on new media, and supports a campaign to help develop e-business in the south. He was made a Whip in Iain Duncan Smith's second re-shuffle. In November 2003, he was promoted to act as a junior shadow education minister. Contact 020 7219 8228
