Indonesia bus crash kills 26
At least 26 people, many of them young children, have been killed in a bus crash in Indonesia.

The bush plunged into eight metres-deep (27 feet) ravine near Jember in East Java, about 900 kilometres (540 miles) east of the capital, Jakarta.

The bus was taking a group of children to a local beach. The driver lost control of the bus after a tyre burst, according to the Antara news agency.

"We have had more than 70 people, old and young, admitted. There are 13 women and nine children including two infants killed," said a doctor at the hospital in Jember.

A police spokesman described the scene as "terrible".

The bus belonged to the state-owned Damri public bus company and was taking the children and their parents from Jember to a nearby beach.

"The bus fell into a ravine near Arjasa and we are still working to retrieve the passengers," a police officer in Jember told the French news agency AFP.
