The president of Tanzania, Benjamin Mkapa, has defended his government's privatisation policy saying it had produced higher revenues.

Speaking as he opened a two-week parliamentary session, Mr Mkapa said since coming to power in 1995, his government had achieved lower inflation, increased revenues and improved relations with donors.
