Political profile

Liz Blackman was first elected in 1997 and has a solid background in local government, with particular experience in bringing together government and businesses to facilitate economic regeneration.

She also has a significant knowledge of education, having been head of the upper school at a large comprehensive.

Ms Blackman began her progress up the political ladder when she was nominated to the Treasury select committee (replacing Diane Abbott).

She later became parliamentary private secretary to Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon, a post she retained after the 2001 election.
