Colin Burgon
Date of birth 22 April 1948 Political profile Colin Burgon was elected in 1997 to represent Elmet, at his third attempt at the seat. A former teacher and local government officer, he made it clear at his maiden speech that he did not envisage a high flying ministerial career for himself. In his first term in Parliament, Mr Burgon concentrated on working in his hard-won seat, becoming involved in a local controversy with his support for a local Millennium Village project. After his re-election in 2001, he joined the rebellion over select committee membership which inflicted the government's first Commons defeat, even though he was at pains to stress that it was, technically, a free vote. Mr Burgon also hinted that he was becoming uneasy with Labour's attachment to the private finance initiative (PFI) and Public Private Partnerships (PPP).
