Reports from central Mali say eight people have been killed in clashes between two neighbouring villages.

The fighting broke out after people from one of the villages near the town of Segou tried to set up fishing nets on the river Niger.

Residents of the second village thought the nets would deprive them of much of their traditional catch.

The area is reported to remain tense.
