Andy Love
Date of birth 21 March 1949 Political profile Andy Love first won Edmonton for Labour in 1997, and held it in 2001. He was already very familiar with the Commons, having worked as a parliamentary officer for the Co-operative movement. Until joining the government as parliamentary private secretary to Jacqui Smith after the 2001 election, Mr Love was an assiduous tabler of Early Day Motions - a kind of parliamentary petition - and is a member of a plethora of backbench groups. He chairs the Building Societies Group, is an opponent of those who want societies to lose the mutual status and is an advocate of credit unions. He has also been a regular speaker on Cyprus, supporting a "peaceful, just and lasting settlement". He is said to "maintain good links with both the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities". Mr Love proved himself one of the keenest MP supporters of Frank Dobson's campaign for the Labour nomination for the London mayoralty. He did, however, rebel against the Labour whip in seeking to strengthen the Freedom of Information Act. Contact Commons Office: 020 72196377 lovea@parliament.uk
