Political profile

Jim Murphy's election in 1997 put the seal on the Conservatives' collapse in Scotland, when he won their safest seat.

He has since been notable for his work in Eastwood: holding hundreds of constituency surgeries, spearheading an anti-drugs campaign and even sending Christmas cards to thousands of his constituents.

He reaped the dividend when he held Eastwood in 2001 with a massively increased majority.

A former president of the National Union of Students, he is loyal to New Labour.

In 2002, Mr Murphy was promoted from his role as parliamentary private secretary to Scottish Secretary Helen Liddell to become a government whip, meaning that he does not speak in the Commons.

He also chairs of the Labour Friends of Israel group.
