David Chidgey
David Chidgey

Date of birth

17 September 1947

Political profile

David Chidgey filled a classic Liberal Democrat role in 1994 as the local candidate who overturned a large Tory majority to win an unexpected by-election victory.

He then bucked the trend by retaining his seat in the next two general elections and increased his majority in 2001.

Mr Chidgey had been the party's trade and industry spokesman but gave this up after Charles Kennedy became leader and has focused even more on constituency work.

He is on the socially conservative wing of the Liberal Democrats and has a strong business background as a former partner in a civil engineering firm.

He has announced that he will stand down from Parliament at the next General Election.
