Anne Picking
Date of birth 30 March 1958 Political profile Anne Picking has a lot of hands-on experience in public policy. As a nursing sister for fifteen years in hospitals in Kent, she worked in the sharp end of the NHS, and combined this with a senior role in public sector union UNISON, including a term as its lay president. She has also moved in senior circles within the Labour Party, as a trade union member of its ruling NEC and the party's National Policy Forum. Despite this, she was not reluctant to criticise the government prior to her election in 2001, condemning levels of public sector pay and maintaining unequivocal opposition to the use of private finance initiative deals in the NHS.
