Political profile

Viewed as one of the many skilled political fixers to have emerged via local government, Adam Ingram was first elected to the Commons in 1987 after ten years as a full time official for NALGO (now UNISON); he had also served as leader of East Kilbride council.

He immediately began to climb Labour's ranks, becoming parliamentary private secretary to Neil Kinnock before becoming a frontbench social security spokesman, later moving to trade and industry.

When Labour came to power, however, he became a Northern Ireland minister and in 2001 joined the Ministry of Defence as Armed Forces Minister.
