Meals on Wheels goes supersonic

Jet set: Meals on Wheels launch their Tornado delivery service

A Royal Air Force Tornado fighter is aiming to set the record for the fastest, furthest and highest hot meal delivery as part of National Meals on Wheels Day.

The lucky recipient of the Tornado delivery will be the first recorded instance of a WRVF meal going supersonic, is an RAF veteran living in Oxford.

Prime Minister Tony Blair and wife Cherie received their own delivery on the steps of 10 Downing Street on Wednesday morning.

Mr Blair revealed that he used to deliver meals with his mother in Durham when he was a youngster.

Mrs Blair's mother also used to hand out hot dinners in Oxford.

The day has been organised to raise funds and awareness for the Meals on Wheels service, which provides more than 24 million hot dinners every year to the elderly and housebound.

The Women's Royal Voluntary Service, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, is one of the mainstays of the organisation, delivering more than half of the UK's meals on wheels.

Chairman of Meals on Wheels Roger Denton said: "I think it was quite poignant for Mr Blair to remember how he used to do deliveries and here he was as Prime Minister getting a delivery himself."

He added: "People don't always understand how essential it is and what a lifeline it can be."

Speaker of the House of Commons Betty Boothroyd will also receive a delivery on Wednesday and Health Secretary Frank Dobson will be delivering meals in London's Tower Hamlets.

Last year's celebrity recipient was the Queen Mother.
