Brazilian fans celebrate fifth World Cup win

Newspapers in Brazil have saluted the striker Ronaldo for scoring the two goals which won the World Cup.

"The World is ours", says O Globo. "Brazil, Five-Time champions!"

"The phenomenon demolished the Berlin Wall with two goals, equalled Pele as the top scorer in the Cup and exorcised the ghosts of '98", O Globo says of Ronaldo.

It quotes Ronaldo as saying: "This is a moment to savour."

"The fiesta has begun on Copacabana Beach," O Globo reports.

Jornal do Brasil says: "The match was Ronaldo's consecration, he scored both goals, giving Brazil the title which eluded it in '98."

"Ronaldo is the hero of the match and the hero of the championship," the daily says, adding that he dedicated the cup to his physiotherapist.

Mass celebrations

Tens of thousands of revellers blocked the main street of Sao Paulo while in the north-eastern city of Bahia, the drums of the African gods beat out a victory rhythm, Jornal do Brasil reports.

"Five-times champions," screams a headline in the prestigious Folha de Sao Paulo.

"Two goals for Ronaldo and Brazil becomes the only team to win the World Cup five times."

"Seven games, seven victories!" boasts Folha, saying coach Luis Felipe Scolari's team is the first to achieve this in recent times.

"It put an end to a 32-year taboo in which the team failed to win all its games."

Brazil are on top of the world

"From limbo to World Cup champions in one year," Folha continues.

Another leading daily, Estado de Sao Paulo, says Brazil beat Germany in a "great final", not only winning another World Cup but "reinforcing the dominance of Brazilian football.

The football web site Futebolao described the match as "difficult, well played tactically".

"But Brazil boasted the crucial difference: Ronaldo" after two years of suffering, the Inter-Milan ace regained all his ability and fame and ended up deservedly on top of the world."
