A British warship has rescued a woman who had spent six days clinging to debrisafter being washed into the Caribbean Sea during Hurricane Mitch.

A helicopter from HMS Sheffield lifted the Spanish-speaking woman from the sea some eighty miles north of Honduras.

Her condition was said to be stable after the rescue.
