Turkey take over Afghan airport

Turkish forces in Afghanistan have taken over command of the military operation at the airport in the capital, Kabul.

The airport had been under the control of the British Royal Air Force since January.

British forces have restored the runway and buildings at the airport and cleared mines and other unexploded weapons, but officials say there are still about 50,000 mines around the airport perimeter.

Today's handover was marked by a ceremony which included a fly-past by British and Turkish helicopters.

Ten days ago, Turkey - the only mainly Muslim member of Nato - also took over from Britain the command of the international security force in Kabul.
